Evaluation, Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In our media A2 coursework project this year we had the following options to choose from;

1. A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:

o a website homepage for the band;
o a cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package)
o a magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package).

2. A promotion package for a new soap opera, to include a TV trailer, together with two of the following three options:
o a listings magazine front cover featuring the new soap
o two hyperlinked webpage’s (with video extract) for the soap’s website
o a poster for the soap
3. A short film in its entirety, lasting approximately five minutes, which may be live action or animated or a combination of both, together with two of the following three options:
o a poster for the film
o a radio trailer for the film
o a film magazine review page featuring the film
In our group of three we decided on question 2, a promotion package for a new soap opera. This included three ancillary tasks which was a magazine front cover, hyperlinked pages for the soaps website and a poster advertising the release or series. However after a month or two into our projects we found that the footage we had was starting to look more like a music video. Therefore we changed our brief to question 1.
After studying a number of different music videos specialising in the genre of ‘Hardcore’ we noticed that one of the key features each video had was minimum lyrics in the track. Therefore a starting point for us was choosing the correct music to link with the beat of the footage we already had. We then chose to produce a video for the new released track I HATE YOU - Supreme & MOB Ft. JJ from Clubland xtream 7 CD which my friend was featured on. We emailed her producers to ask for permission to use this.
The lyrics in this song are
I hate you
I hate everything about you, and all the shit you put me through. I got five words to say to you, am better off without you. Me and you were so though, what the fuck was I supposed to do Got fiver words to say to you, am getting rid of you
Am getting rid of you Am getting rid of you
Going down.
This whole verse is then repeated throughout the track. This uses the same forms of conventions of real media products. This is a typical piece of music in the genre. As well and defining the genres stereotype it also follows a relationship between a young couples breaking up. Using such lyrics “am better off without you”. We then developed our research into the same topic of what our was song was and came across videos such as
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJ1eOJ1RWh8&feature=fvst Masters of the Hardcore – Statement of Disorder
This video gave us a rough outline to what type of settings, locations, lighting, editing and footage were in hardcore events and videos. We knew that fast clips and shots would be needed in capturing our new footage and in our editing. Editing shots to the main beat and rhythm was also a key feature for us to make the shots more intense as were drawing in your attention whilst getting into the beat. Most hardcore videos will include this feature. Fast forward and slow motion effects are added to build up the climax of the song. Bright colours and extremely bright flashing lights also help to show the suspension in this. To show this is our video we used effects such as flashing lights overlapping, fast forwarding, rewinds, pans, handheld camera shots to get the correct beat in editing our footage. We slowed the music down to count the amount of bars between each section for the flashing lights and shots to match in time.
Another video I analysed was
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2DeM1pCcwo&feature=relmfu Masters of the Hardcore – Symphony of Sins
This hardcore video has an extremely good climax to the song. The footage that is used to show the build up is very effective. The shots of the foot still then walking increases the camera shot larger and the pace faster also among the topic of the video arriving at an arena. Linking this into our music video we included shots such as running on the beach and still shorts to show our tension. We used the same forms and conventions of what real media uses in showing there tension.
Hardcore has a very strong stereotype on the dress code for men and women that attend hardcore raves or have a high interest in the genre. Mostly all the women that attend the events, raves are commonly dressed in bare minimum such as aluminous bikinis, body paint which is neon. Colours such as fluorescent, neon are the most common. This links to the type of lighting that the developed in hardcore raves that show fluorescent body paint and aluminates neon colours.
However we challenged this in our music video because our character, who was a female, was mostly fully dressed. This is very rare to see in a hardcore video. On the other hand to add a clip to showing a build up, there is one short clip of our actor getting unchanged to show that an event is taking place to get ready for. The stereotype of clothing that hardcore fans wear is mostly down to the lighting that they included in there music. The strobe lights, spot lights, flash lights that they have are designed to aluminates the body and only show them for a number of seconds, therefore wearing bare minimum to show this is an obvious fashion and painting your self with fluorescent colours to highlight yourself and make you glow in the dark is also another huge part of raves.
We also challenged this when having clips of the DJ on the decks, no lighting was involved and it was a normal house party, having typical hardcore rave dance moves, mosh pits. We did included the similar camera shots when capturing the DJ like all hardcore videos do, after researching it repetively shows clips every now and then of the DJ playing in entice the viewer in the music and make them feel like their there. We planned our costume as casual, everyday wear.

Ancillary Tasks

CD Sleeve - Front cover, spine, back cover

Front cover

Back Cover

Font and text

For my font on my ancillary tasks, using my own knowledge from other lessons I knew a website that has every type of font possible. As I was inspired by the Clubland CD covers I used the same font. This made it look like a hardcore clubland package that was a real promotion.

The website is

Photoshop Editing

As I had an advantage using the Software 'Photoshop' I extended this by making the edits and effects up to the highest standard that I could produce.
However as Tim had never used Photoshop, I helped him out and gave him shortcuts and explained how to use the programme. This was also the case for a couple of other students in my class.
The Final photos I chose to put on my front cover, back cover and tour advertisement are:
ORIGINAL -

MY EDIT -

SECOND ORIGINAL PHOTO -

MY EDIT 2 -

TOUR POSTER ORIGINAL PHOTO -

MY EDIT 3 -

I followed the theme of black and white throughout my promotion and digi-pak to link them with each other. This is also very common in professional digi-packs.

CD dimensions

For our individual ancillary task, I had to research into the CD dimensions so I can set my canvas size correctly on Photoshop. I simply researched this on Google by typing in CD dimensions and went on the following website:

Our Complete Music Video

A2 Media Studies

Biles,Tim
Manning,Alice
Singleton,Rachel

"I hate you"

Editing complete

We finally finished our music video !
After a number of weeks having the time to edit our music video, we have finally completed it up to a reasonable standard of profession.
I am very happy with the outcome due to the problems we occurred in producing a task overall. We encounter many problems in our group, yet we managed to solve them all and work with what we had. Therefore I am pleased we have a finish music video.

More software issues

In a spare break we had during the college hours we came to the media department to do some editing but unfortunately adobe premier pro decides to freeze every time we try to open any kind of footage, this is really frustrating us as a group now as this continues to happen every time and were running out of time to edit. We feel as though no software has 'played' the game right. I have had no contact from Tim for over a week now and I and us as a group are getting increasingly annoyed with our project. Rachel and I feel as though after a mishap from Tim he hasn’t shown the drive to repair our project and we are now aimless and not motivated.

Problems with editing software

We have had some footage for a while now but every time we go to put it onto the computer by capturing it on Adobe Premier Pro each of us had the message 'the disk drive is full' so we had to call in the computer technician who told us we had to save it on the C/ Drive and then transfer the data to the Fs6 which is making the process seem on-going and slow which raises further concern for the deadline coming up.

More research

Scooter - I'm Lonely

I found this video very interesting and inspirational because it has a similar storyline to yours, a relationship that hasn’t worked out, however it’s always cutting from the music and the story, linking the both narratives together to produce one outcome.
It also includes flashing lights and editing that’s based around the beat and rhythm of the song, when the beat drops it, flashing lights, rave shots and fast shots are all you see. However when the drop slows down the shots are slow pans, following the storyline, enticing the viewer into the emotion of the lyrics.
We hope to included this in our editing at it sells a video and makes you feel part of it.

Editing

We are currently editing our music video on the programme premier pro using as many effects as we can to inprove and make our final outcome up to a high standard. we have used effects such as Flashes, fade in & fade out, fast forward, overlapping, boarder effects, slow motion, grunge boarder.
All these effects have inporoved our music video in helping us make it look like a real hardcore video. the flashes are epsecially effect and we used this effect a number of times thoughout the video.
The programme became more familiar as we begun to use it regularly and then from last year.

Time planning and editing

Now we have the 2 main parts of our tasks, the music video footage and the photos from the photo shoot all we have to do now is edit our footage using special features like flash lights, fast shots, fast pace matching the rhythm of the music, Also having to complete our ancillary tasks.
So we planned for over the next few weeks to take it in turns on what part of the coursework we would work on, we have three lessons a week two 2hour lessons and one 1hour so we would take advantage of the group being together and work on our music video for the two 2hour lessons and work on our individual tasks in our own time and the one 1hour lesson.

Photoshoot

As part of my individual input to the group I took the lead role on of taking a photo shoot of a female model for our ancillary tasks to produce our Cd cover tour poster.
I knew I had to capture a number of different poses, costumes and locations for us each to have a slight different ancillary task each.
I borrowed a cannon SLR 400D over the following weekend and captured these as we need them as soon as possible to get cracking.
I had a very successful shoot and had some excellent photographs.

These are a few photos from the shoot

Ancillary Tasks

For our ancillary task to go along with our main task ‘music video’ we had the choice out of
o a website homepage for the band;
o a cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package)
o a magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package).

We had to choose two out of the three to complete as part of our coursework, therefore I chose
o a cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package)
o a magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package).

I personally had an advantage to other members in my group as alongside my Media, I am also currently taking Photography and graphics. The skills I have developed of the last two years in using media technologies such as Adobe Photoshop will really help me create a high standard of work.
As this was an advantage I really took upon the opportunity of creating a brilliant ancillary task.

Cd Covers

As you can see from looking at these two album covers the first things that hit you are the colours and the women. Going to back to women being barely dressed in this genre of music seems to be the key selling point. All of 'Clubland hardcore xtreme' covers all included a female dressed in some type of underwear and swimming wear. There boobs and legs are always showing.
The colours that all Clubland covers included are Bright bold colours, special effects, explosions and lighting.
The way the effects have been presented kind of reflect a messy feel that may link to how the festivals and raves may be.

Hardcore album covers

For our researching and development of our own knowledge of our ancillary tasks, we had to explore our researching of the main features you included in a digi-pack and advertisements in music promotion. We had to do a number of analysing on album covers such as
• Hardcore Heaven
• Clubland Hardcore extreme
• Westfest
• Darren Styles
• Dj Hype
• Masters of Hardcore

To begin producing and planning our own successful promotion.

Features that we repetitively came across were
• Barcodes
• Music labels
• Dates & times
• Venues
• Featuring
• Bright bold colours ( fluorescent, aluminous, bright )
• Serial code
• Record company
• Information on websites, twitter, blogs, face book
• Copyright legal obligations

We knew that we had to include all of these features to make our promotion and package as realistic and professional, also shows it up to a high standard. When including all these features it shows we have a high understand of the expectations Record labels and produces expect.

Female sexual appeals are a massive selling point !

We decided that we should have some more footage of make-up being applied and a few other shots so the girls went into the college toilets and filmed some footage. Rachel was applying make up to her eyes and Alice to her lips - there is also a clip of Rachel, back to camera, taking off her top which would be useful for our project as in most things now a day’s sex appeal is one of the biggest selling points. You can see evidence for this in most music video's now and two artists that come to mind are Beyonce and Christina Aguilera both their respective video's for both dirty and single ladies have a lot of skin showing and despite the fact that there are debates about whether this is right or not to corporation it sells.

Advertisements of Hardcore Music Festivals

Here is an advert for Westfest (Hardcore) 2010 which is the UK's biggest dance festival of the year and attracts thousands of people the editor uses quick shots of important people and at the end of each bar another shot comes in so it's a suttle kind of clever where if you weren’t looking for it you wouldn't see it.

Styles & Breeze - Amigos

Styles & Breeze - Amigos is a song that Tim recommended to us as he is a hardcore listener which is handy and can be seen as an advantage to the task. This is the official club music video.
In the video styles and breeze are talked about as being car jackers. an attractive woman is seen driving a Ferrari to a club, while she is inside dancing (once again a music video using sex appeal to attract interest) her car is being robbed and although it is farfetched an automatic driving system scares the robbers and parks her car back in front of the club once again establishing equilibrium. Even music video's have narrative.

Our storyline footage

We have planned to capture footage of Rachel on the beach running, to help show a build up in our climax, writing in the sand 'I hate you' to refer back to the song title and putting crosses though love hearts to link with the lyrics 'Am getting rid of you'.

Rachel captured this footage down at Bournemouth beach one afternoon, also taking advantage of capturing clips and pans of the stuning scenery, the water, sun setting, the local town to also help build a story and settings in our music video.
This is our main storyline for our film and all we have to do is edit it making it effective with the footage we already have and always referring back to the storyline. This is effect to the audience because it refers them to knowing what’s happening.

Researching On Hardcore

Now knowing our track and Genre of our music, we had to begin reseraching other music videos that included key characteristics and a sterotype of a hardcore track.

Our first video that we came upon was:
Masters of Hardcore - Statement of Disorder

Another video we anaylised was:
Masters of Hardcore - Symphony of Sins

This hardcore video has an extremely good climax to the song. The footage that is used to show the build up is very effective. The shots of the foot still then walking increases the camera shot larger and the pace faster also among the topic of the video arriving at an arena. Linking this into our music video we included shots such as running on the beach and still shorts to show our tension. We used the same forms and conventions of what real media uses in showing there tension.

More Footage

After looking at all our footage so far such as our shots of decks, getting changed, applying makeup, partying, dancing, we knew we had to included a rough storyline that had a clear 'Cause effect narrative' of a young female who would be seen as signing the song, also showing her rough time of her break up.

In our music video we knew we had to relate the lyrics of the song into the footage. Therefore we have planned to use red lipstick and write on a mirror 'I hate you' which is the title of the song. This links the two together and makes it professional and realistic.

Our track

I HATE YOU - Supreme & MOB Ft. JJ

More researching & Song choice

After out change of tasks we had to then focus our researching and studying on music videos to get a rough idea of what type of themes, storylines were included in each genre. Before we could minimise our selection of researching all music videos to just one genre we had to find our music.

Lucky my cousin just produced a track producers 'Clubland hardcore xtreme'. As we were running out of time, I emailed the producers as soon as possible asking for permission to use this track in our video, luckily they said yes with a quick reply.

The track is called 'I HATE YOU - Supreme & MOB Ft. JJ'
The lyrics are:

I hate you

I hate everything about you, and all the shit you’ve put me though
I got five words to say to you, am better off without you
Me and you were so though, what the fuck was I supposed to do
Got five words to say to you, am getting rid of you

Am getting rid of you
Am getting rid of you

Going down

After analysing these lyrics it gave us a rough brief of storyline to work with and how we would show this is our footage. Firstly we knew that a female actor was needed because of the singer who’s female and she’s singing about a typical teenage relationship that’s broken up.
Certain verses that are sung like 'I hate everything about you' we need it was a negative relationship therefore, fast footage would show our actors anger that she’s releasing. This would work well with our genre of music 'Hardcore as that is upbeat and fast tempo.

We knew that when it came to editing our footage, we would have to concentrate of beats and the rhythm of the music. Fast flashing shots would also have to be included.
